The Military Service Enrollment Books, Wards 19 and 20, 1861-1862 are housed in two volumes with no index and are located at the Philadelphia City Archives.  They contain a total of 12,539 names. The following information has been extracted from these records: the names of all males resident within wards 19 & 20 of the City of Philadelphia, 18-45 years of age and subject to military service; for each is listed his name, age, occupation, and address.  For those taken into service there is the date entered, rank, regiment and company. It was thought by many people in Philadelphia that the City Directories were used to prepare such a register of men living in Philadelphia, therefore many of these names do not appear in the City Directories from 1862 to 1865. Three maps have been included, a City Ward Map showing the location of the 19^th and 20^th Wards within the City and two maps showing the streets within each of the two wards.
